History of the bookstore

The Moonstone Bookstore and Emporium was opened in 2018. Its name comes from the fictional town in Colorado that Willa Cather used to describe her childhood hometown in the novel The Song of the Lark. The Moonstone is a full-service independently owned bookstore that strives to serve the community not only as a retail store but as a place people can gather, have conversations, and feel at home.

The building in which we are located was built in 1913 and is owned by Dr. Amy Springer. Dr. Springer also owns the book collection. For most of its life the building has been home to several drug stores, a dress shop and in more recent times was a full-service bookstore from 2006-2009 and then home to two different cafes from 2010-2015.

The historic photograph was taken not long after the building was constructed and is courtesy of Jay Yost and Wade Leak. We are grateful for their permission to use the photograph on our web page.
